Areola Reduction

Large Areolas Don’t Have To Stay That Way

Enlarged areolas are often times the result of lactation after pregnancy and occasionally after puberty. Either one or both can be affected.

Procedure Overview: Areola Reduction

1. An outline of the desired size is drawn.

2. Excess areolar skin is removed in the shape of a donut.

3. The resulting opening of the skin is reduced using a purse string suture.

4. The skin and edge of the areola are sutured together.

Recovery Time: Areola Reduction

After the areola reduction you can expect a permanent scar. However, the quality depends on your age, race and other factors.

Despite that, you can expect to have complete sensation in the nipples and are able to breast feed with no problems.

Frequently Asked Areola Reduction Questions

Q: Will I lose sensation in my nipple after the surgery?

Answer: Typically no because the sensory nerves supplying sensation to the nipple and areola come from the depths of the breast tissue directly below the nipple and areola.

Q: Will there be a permanent scar?

Answer: Yes, and the scar quality may vary depending on the patient’s age, race and other factors.

Q: Will I lose my ability to breast feed?

Answer: No, since interference with the milk ducts does not occur.
