Saline Breast Implants

Serving Detroit, Southfield, Port Huron, Ann Arbor, Dundee and Jackson, Michigan

Choosing between saline and silicone breast implants is one of the important decisions you will make regarding your breast augmentation. There are advantages and disadvantages to both types of breast implants. In Michigan, cosmetic surgeon Dr. Rouchdi Rifai can help you make an informed decision about which type of implant will provide the results you desire. During your consultation, he will explain the differences to you in detail, answer all of your questions and concerns, and recommend the ideal option based on your unique body type and aesthetic goals.

The Makeup of Saline Breast Implants

Saline breast implants are encased in a silicone shell and filled with a sterile saline solution. They come in different sizes, shapes, and profiles. You can also choose between a smooth or textured implant shell.

Advantages of Saline Implants

Since saline implants are generally filled after they are placed in the breast pocket, a shorter incision can be used resulting in a smaller scar than is possible using silicone implants. Other benefits of saline implants include:

  • the ability to fill each implant with a different quantity of saline solution in order to prevent or correct breast asymmetry
  • in case of rupture, the saline solution will be harmlessly absorbed into your body
  • rupture is easy to detect because of the deflation of the breast implant
  • the cost of saline breast implants is less than silicone implants

The main difference from silicone implants is that saline implants feel less like your real breast tissue. This is particularly true if you have minimal natural breast tissue. Saline implants are also more prone to rippling and wrinkling than silicone implants. This is especially prominent among women with thin skin and minimal breast tissue. In general, if a more natural look and feel is very important to you, then silicone implants are most likely your best breast implant option.
