What are spider veins?

Spider veins, or telangiectasias, are small veins that are visible through the skin as blue, red, or purple lines. Unlike varicose veins, spider veins do not typically protrude from the skin. Instead, they form spider web-looking lines, hence the name.

Are there any symptoms?

Spider veins do not usually cause symptoms, but some of the symptoms that may be associated with the conditions that lead to varicose and spider veins include

  • Aching legs that feel heavy
  • Swollen ankles
  • Itching near the veins
  • Restless leg syndrome
  • Leg cramps

What causes spider veins?

Like varicose veins, spider veins are due to a combination of genetics and lifestyle. Certain individuals are simply more hereditarily vulnerable than others. Other risk factors include

  • Obesity
  • Pregnancy
  • Hormonal treatments like birth control pills and postmenopausal replacement therapy
  • Jobs that require extended sitting or standing
  • Increase abdominal pressure from constipation or very tight clothing

It is estimated that more than half of adults will experience spider veins or varicose veins in their lifetimes.

How are spider veins treated?

The treatment for spider veins is simpler than you might have imagined. The most successful treatment, called sclerotherapy, involves injection with a very concentrated saline solution. The solution is injected directly into the spider vein, which causes it to disappear over a period of about three to six weeks. No hospitalization is required, and the procedure is inexpensive.

If spider veins are interfering with your quality of life, treatment is easier than you might think. Please contact the Birmingham Cosmetic Surgery & Vein Center today at 248-723-9370 to schedule your Detroit spider veins appointment.
